The Expedia–SynXis Relationship

Expedia Group remains one of the highest-volume OTA channels for most hotel categories globally. A clean, well-managed SynXis connection to Expedia directly influences your property's visibility, pricing competitiveness, and reservation delivery reliability.

Unlike some OTA connections that operate on simple push-only models, the Expedia–SynXis interface is a genuine two-way data exchange — rates and availability flow out, while reservation messages, modifications, and cancellations flow back in via GraphQL-based API communication.

1. Rate and Availability (ARI) Distribution

Availability, rates, and inventory (ARI) pushed from SynXis to Expedia must be verified at the channel level, not just assumed successful at the point of transmission. Build a verification routine:

  • After major rate strategy changes, check Expedia Partner Central to confirm live rates match your SynXis configuration.
  • Verify that sell limits and stop-sell restrictions are transmitting correctly across all applicable room types.
  • Audit rate plan mapping to ensure promotional rates (Member Prices, mobile rates) are correctly associated with the right Expedia rate plan IDs.

2. Managing GraphQL Reservation Updates

Expedia uses GraphQL-based reservation messaging for bookings, modifications, and cancellations. Common issues to watch for:

  • Modification messages not updating the existing reservation in your PMS — creating duplicate booking records instead
  • Cancellation messages arriving but inventory not being returned to the live pool in SynXis
  • Special request fields being stripped or truncated during the GraphQL-to-PMS handoff

Run a controlled test series monthly using test reservations to validate the full modification and cancellation workflow end-to-end.

3. Auditing Hotel Collect vs. Expedia Collect Models

Your front-desk and accounting teams must clearly understand who is collecting payment for every booking. Review reservation vouchers to confirm the payment flow:

  • Expedia Collect: Expedia charges the guest directly and issues a Virtual Credit Card (VCC) to the hotel for authorization at check-in.
  • Hotel Collect: The property charges the guest's personal credit card, then pays a monthly commission to Expedia.

Misidentifying the collect model at the front desk creates accounting errors and guest-facing payment friction. Ensure your PMS displays the collect model prominently on every Expedia reservation.

4. Preventing Pricing Discrepancies

Rate parity violations between your SynXis rates and Expedia's displayed prices are one of the fastest ways to damage your channel relationship. Contributing factors include:

  • Manual rate overrides applied inside Expedia Partner Central that conflict with SynXis-pushed values
  • Promotional programs (Expedia Member Prices, targeted promotions) applying additional discounts not accounted for in your SynXis rate strategy
  • Currency conversion rounding differences in multi-currency properties

5. Proactive System Management Wins

A live Expedia interface should be actively managed, not left on autopilot. Building a strict checking routine — complete with mapping audits, error tracking, and cross-checking data with Expedia Partner Central — is the best way to safeguard your booking revenue.

When your CRS, OTA channels, and PMS work together flawlessly, your property can capture global demand efficiently and without manual errors.
